France urges accountability for violence in Syria amid coastal unrest

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot announced on Monday that he had spoken with Asaad Shaibani, the Foreign Minister in Syria’s caretaker government, emphasizing the need to hold those responsible for the crimes accountable amid recent violence on the Syrian coast.

Barrot added that he conveyed to Shaibani France’s firm condemnation of the recent violence in Syria.

On Sunday, United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk underscored the urgent need for comprehensive transitional justice in Syria in light of the recent coastal unrest.

In a statement, Turk noted reports of executions carried out by unknown perpetrators, including remnants of the ousted regime and forces linked to the caretaker government.

He stressed that the Syrian government must back its declarations of legal respect with swift actions to protect civilians. This includes preventing violations, ensuring accountability, and taking necessary measures to safeguard the population.

Meanwhile, the Chinese Foreign Ministry stated they are closely monitoring the situation in Syria and call for respect for the political process.
