EU condemns violence in Syria’s coastal region, calls to protect civilians

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The European Union condemned on Saturday the ongoing violence in Syria’s coastal regions, urging the protection of civilians as clashes continue for a third consecutive day.

In an official statement, the EU strongly denounced the latest attacks and any violence targeting civilians, emphasizing that “Civilians have to be protected in all circumstances in full respect of international humanitarian law.”

Since March 6, fierce battles have erupted between the Syrian General Security forces and armed groups reportedly linked to the former regime, leaving hundreds dead, injured, or captured.

The EU also called on “external actors” to fully respect Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Furthermore, the EU reaffirmed its opposition to any efforts that destabilize Syria or obstruct a peaceful transition.

“The EU condemns any attempts to undermine stability and the prospects for a lasting peaceful transition, inclusive and respectful of all Syrians in their diversity,” the statement read.
