SWEIDA, Syria (North Press) – A political dialogue was held at the Cultural Center in Sweida on Wednesday, bringing together representatives from various professional, union, and civil society groups. The meeting aimed to establish a collective political vision that reflects the aspirations of the region’s residents.
Nidal Abu Sobh, a member of the Professional Gathering in Sweida, told North Press that the region’s political stance remains unchanged, reaffirming its alignment with Damascus and rejecting foreign interference, particularly in response to recent Israeli statements about the Druze community.
Abu Sobh emphasized that some external actors are attempting to divert Sweida from its national course, describing these efforts as the work of “treacherous hands” seeking to exploit the region’s religious and economic difficulties.
He asserted that those advocating for such shifts represent a small minority and do not reflect the broader consensus among Sweida’s population. “The people of Sweida consider themselves Syrians first, above any other identity,” he added.
Participants in the discussion stressed the need for a state based on citizenship, rule of law, and equality, ensuring the rights and freedoms of all Syrians regardless of ethnic or religious background.
Additionally, they reaffirmed their commitment to Syria’s territorial integrity and rejected separatist agendas, warning against external actors exploiting minority issues for geopolitical interests.
At the conclusion of the meeting, attendees proposed forming a representative committee to discuss the vision for Syria’s future governance. The committee aims to work towards a broad national consensus, ensuring that any future government structure reflects the diverse interests of Syrian society.
The gathering highlights Sweida’s strategic role in Syria’s political landscape, as the province continues to navigate its unique challenges amid ongoing national and regional tensions.
