Syrian caretaker government targets Assad-linked business empires
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian caretaker government is scrutinizing the multi-billion-dollar business empires owned by allies of former President Bashar al-Assad, Reuters reported on Thursday.
Determined to rebuild Syria after 13 years of conflict, the caretaker government has vowed to dismantle the highly centralized, corrupt economic system long dominated by Assad’s loyalists, Reuters added.
As part of its anti-corruption campaign, the caretaker government has engaged in discussions with some of these influential figures, insisting that they must play a role in eradicating corruption and illegal activities.
Led by the Ahmad al-Sharaa, President of the Transitional period, the caretaker government has established a committee to examine the complex business interests of prominent figures linked to Assad, including Samer Foz and Mohammad Hamsho, three sources told Reuters.
In parallel, the Central Bank of Syria has frozen the assets and bank accounts of companies and individuals associated with the former regime, including those on U.S. sanctions lists.
