Syria’s FM seeks economic sanctions relief during Doha visit

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian Foreign Minister in the caretaker government, Asaad al-Shibani, announced on Sunday discussions with Qatari Foreign Minister Mohammed al-Khulaifi focused on lifting economic sanctions imposed on Syria.

“We have discussed with the Qatari Prime Minister all key and strategic issues,” al-Shibani said in a press statement. “He emphasized that Qatar has played a significant role in supporting the Syrian people.”

He expressed hope that Doha would become a partner in Syria’s peace-building phase.

Qatar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohammed al-Khulaifi, affirmed that the discussions aimed to explore steps contributing to state-building in Syria.

“Qatar will spare no effort in supporting our Syrian brothers,” he said.

Al-Shaibani reiterated Syria’s call for the United States to lift sanctions, which have severely impacted the country’s economy and infrastructure.

The visit, the first official trip by al-Shibani to Doha, included a high-level Syrian delegation comprising Defense Minister Murhaf Abu Qasra and General Intelligence Chief Anas Khattab.
