Impact of conflict on children reached devastating level in 2024 – UNICEF

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) warned on Saturday that the impact of armed conflicts on children worldwide in 2024 has reached devastating levels.

Catherine Russell, UNICEF’s Executive Director, said, “By almost every measure, 2024 has been one of the worst years on record for children in conflict in UNICEF’s history—both in terms of the number of children affected and the level of impact on their lives.”

In its report, UNICEF revealed that the number of children living in conflict zones or forcibly displaced due to violence has reached unprecedented levels.

Russell emphasized that approximately 473 million children—more than one in six globally—are living in conflict zones. She also noted a troubling trend.

She pointed out that the proportion of children exposed to conflict has nearly doubled, rising from about 10 percent in the 1990s to 19 percent today.
