Pedersen urges ceasefire continuation, political transition in Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.N. Special Envoy to Syria, Geir Pedersen, called on Wednesday for sustained efforts to maintain the fragile ceasefire in northeastern Syria, emphasizing its critical role in paving the way for a political resolution.
Pedersen hoped the ceasefire in northern Syria holds until a political settlement is reached, acknowledging the persistent and significant challenges facing the region.
The envoy also highlighted prospects for a transitional period in Syria, noting signs of stability in Damascus.
He indicated that he conveyed to Syria’s new administration the United Nations’ full support for a comprehensive political transition.
Pedersen stressed the urgent humanitarian needs in the country, calling for immediate international assistance.
He further underscored the importance of free and fair elections following the transitional phase as part of a broader roadmap to peace.
He pointed out that the U.N.’s aim is a credible and reliable political process in Syria, linking it to ending international sanctions on the war-torn nation.
Meanwhile, the U.S. State Department announced on Tuesday an extension of the ceasefire between Turkey and the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) until the end of the week, offering a temporary reprieve amidst ongoing tensions.
