10 people killed in war remnant blasts in central Syria

DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Ten people have been killed, and several others injured in Deir ez-Zor and Homs in central Syria due to landmine explosions since the beginning of this week.

Early on Wednesday, a 15-year-old boy, Saud al-Awn, died, and a 13-year-old, Khaldoun al-Salem, was injured when a explosive device detonated as they tampered with it in the town of Sabikhan in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor.

Six fatalities were reported in Deir ez-Zor and four in the Homs countryside, with four additional injuries—one in central Syria and three in the eastern region.

The victims included two children in the eastern Deir ez-Zor countryside and four others in the Palmyra and in the town of al-Sukhnah in eastern Homs countryside, among them an elderly man.

The landmines, planted by Iranian-backed militias, the toppled Syrian regime army, and other forces during the Islamic State’s (ISIS) presence in the region, continue to pose a grave threat to local residents. There have been growing calls for the removal of these deadly remnants of war.
