U.S. extends SDF-Turkey ceasefire, pushes for reduced tensions in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. State Department confirmed on Tuesday evening that it is maintaining discussions with both the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and Turkey to address ongoing tensions in northern Syria.
Speaking at a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said they are engaged in discussions with the SDF and Turkey, working to chart a path that reduces tensions.
Miller announced that the ceasefire between the SDF and Turkey has been extended until the end of the week.
Addressing concerns about a potential Turkish offensive on northern Syria, Miller emphasized that they do not believe it is in anyone’s interest to see an escalation of conflict in Syria.
He further stated that “We don’t want to see any party take advantage of the current unstable situation to advance their own narrow interests at the expense of the broader Syrian national interest.”
Acknowledging the challenges, Miller noted, “It’s a very challenging issue. There is a – there are longstanding tensions between Türkiye and these groups [SDF],” adding that “It is not an easy path forward but it is certainly one that we’re pursuing.”
The State Department continues to evaluate the situation in Syria, considering the appropriate timing to send personnel to advance the principles laid out by the U.S. Secretary of State regarding Syria’s future.
