U.S. Airstrikes Eliminate 12 ISIS Fighters in Central Syria
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Monday the elimination of 12 ISIS members during precise airstrikes in Syria’s central desert region, known as the Badia.
The strikes targeted known ISIS camps and operatives, marking a significant step in ongoing efforts to degrade the terrorist group’s capabilities and prevent its resurgence amid Syria’s current instability.
Details of the Operation
According to a CENTCOM statement, the airstrikes were conducted on December 16 and successfully hit ISIS locations without causing civilian casualties.
“Today’s airstrikes in Syria targeted ISIS camps and known operatives, killing 12 terrorists. These operations are part of our ongoing mission to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat ISIS,” the statement read.
The strikes were executed in regions that had previously been under the control of the now-deposed Syrian regime and Russian forces.
Preventing ISIS Resurgence
CENTCOM emphasized that the strikes align with its mission to prevent ISIS from reorganizing and conducting external operations.
General Michael Erik Kurilla, CENTCOM Commander, reaffirmed the U.S. commitment to neutralizing the ISIS threat in Syria and beyond.
“CENTCOM, in partnership with allies and regional partners, will not allow ISIS to exploit Syria’s current instability to reestablish itself,” said General Kurilla in the statement.
The command further noted that assessments of the operation’s impact are ongoing.
ISIS in Central Syria
Despite its territorial defeat in 2019, ISIS remains a persistent threat in Syria, particularly in the Badia desert. The group has exploited the region’s vast, sparsely populated terrain to launch ambushes and regroup.
Over the past year, sporadic ISIS attacks have targeted Syrian government forces, civilians, and allied militias, raising concerns about the group’s resilience.
SDF and U.S. Collaboration
The U.S., in partnership with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), has been combating ISIS remnants across Syria. This coalition has significantly weakened the group, limiting its ability to operate freely or control territory.
However, with ongoing instability in Syria following the fall of the Assad regime earlier this month, experts warn that ISIS may seek to exploit the power vacuum to rebuild its networks.
Broader Implications
The successful operation underscores the importance of sustained international efforts to combat terrorism in Syria and the broader Middle East. The strikes also signal the U.S.’s intent to remain a key player in counterterrorism operations despite shifting regional dynamics.
