IRGC leaders leave Syria to Iraq after intensified Israeli airstrikes
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – Three vehicles transporting leaders of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Iranian-backed militias left late on Wednesday Syria heading to Iraq for fear of being targeted after the recent Israeli escalation and the increase in airstrikes.
A military source in the Syrian government forces said that three vehicles carrying 11 top IRGC leaders and Iranian-backed militias left Syrian territory and crossed into Iraqi territory through the al-Qaim border crossing.
He added that the leaders were in areas of Homs, Palmyra, and Damascus, and all of them hold Iranian and Iraqi nationalities.
The departure of these leaders came after repeated and accurate targeting of officials in the Iranian-backed militias, with the most recent being the airstrikes on the city of Palmyra in central Syria that killed 36 soldiers of the Syrian government forces and injured more than 50 others.
