U.S. recognizes death of American psychotherapist in Syria
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Department of State recognized on Tuesday the death of Majd Kamalmaz, an American psychotherapist from Texas who had disappeared in Syria seven years ago.
“Today we honor Majd Kamalmaz, an American who died while being held in Syria,” the Department of State said in a press release.
It added that “He traveled to the region to provide medical services to those traumatized by the Syrian civil war and was last seen at a Syrian government checkpoint in 2017.”
The demanded the Syrian government to “answer for what happened to Majd.”
In May, Maryam, daughter of Majd Kamalmaz, told The Associated Press about the death of her father.
Maryam said at the time that the officials told her they believe the death occurred years ago, early in her father’s captivity.
Majd Kamalmaz was on a trip in Syria to visit an elderly family member when he disappeared in February 2017 at the age of 59. The FBI has said he was stopped at a Syrian government checkpoint in a suburb of Damascus and had not been heard from since.
