People continue anti-HTS protests in Syria’s Idlib
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – People in several towns in Idlib Governorate, northwestern Syria, protested on Tuesday evening against Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) and its leader, Abu Mohammad al-Julani.
A local source said that hundreds of people participated in anti-HTS protests in the towns of Salqin, Ariha, al-Fu’ah, and Taftanaz in the countryside of Idlib.
The source pointed out the protesters raised various slogans calling for the overthrowing of al-Julani and HTS’s General Security Service (GSS), as well as the release of detainees held in the group’s prisons.
Anti-HTS protests have erupted in various areas of Idlib and the countryside of Aleppo, northwestern Syria, since late February sparked by the killing of a man under torture in HTS prisons according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
The protesters announced they would continue demonstrations until their demands are achieved.
The HTS controls half of Idlib and parts of Hama, Aleppo, and Latakia governorates in northwestern Syria. Additionally, it has established the Salvation Government which is considered the civil wing of the group.
