Kurdish Red Crescent opens 1st oncology center in NE Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Tuesday, the Kurdish Red Crescent organization inaugurated an oncology department at a newly established hospital in the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria.

Dilgesh Issa, Co-chair of the Kurdish Red Crescent, told North Press that they started constructing the hospital two years ago, which consists of three floors.

The first floor is designated for patients of blood disorders and cancer, the second is for burn patients, and the third is for thalassemia patients.

Issa said that the Oncology Department was opened today, Dec. 19, and medication, chemotherapy doses, and laboratory tests will be provided to patients for free. He further added that they will strive to procure specific devices for diagnosing and conducting biopsies.

He noted that the burn and thalassemia departments within the hospital are still being prepared and will be completed in the upcoming months, with an announcement made once both departments are ready.

Issa stated that this hospital is the first of its kind in North and East Syria. “It was established due to the urgent need and demand of the local population, as well as the increasing number of cancer cases. The aim is to save time and travel costs for the patients and their families.”

He noted that they will engage with international NGOs and the United Nations to provide support and assistance in securing doses for cancer patients.
