Taekwondo team from NE Syria wins silver in international tournament

QAMISHLI, Syria (North press) – A women’s taekwondo team from northeastern Syria won a silver medal in the World Taekwondo President’s Cup (Asia Region) in Amman, Jordan.

The 5th edition of the World Taekwondo President’s Cup, hosted by the Jordan Taekwondo Federation, took place from Nov. 9 to Nov. 11 in the Prince Hamzah Sport Hall.

A women’s team from Tigers Taekwondo School in Hasakah Governorate, northeastern Syria, participated in the event.

Over 400 players from 40 countries, including four female players from the Taekwondo Tigers School, participated in the tournament, which featured renowned male and female Taekwondo stars.

The Tigers Taekwondo School was established in 2009, in Hasakah. It holds an international certificate from Korea, the primary home of this famous combat sport, and has participated in several continental and international tournaments, culminating in several awards and medals.

Dilyar Hassan, leader of the Tigers Taekwondo team, told North Press that they have prepared for 11 months to participate in a series of world tournaments, including the President’s Cup.

Fatima Qasim of the Tigers Taekwondo team secured the silver medal in the 42 kg weight class. The team was awarded the championship shield.

Hassan highlighted the unique nature of this tournament compared to others they had participated in, citing the notable presence of numerous world taekwondo stars, including top-ranked athletes on the International Taekwon-Do Federation list. “One example was the match between Alaa Hussein from our team and Mobina Nematzadeh, an international Iranian champion.”

Tigers Taekwondo players competed during the tournament against teams from China, Iran, Jordan and Saudi Arabia.
