Armenian Syrians denounce mass displacement in Artsakh

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – Armenian Syrians in the city of Hasakah, northeastern Syria, condemned in a statement on Monday the Azerbaijani government’s displacement of Armenians in the decades-contested region of Artsakh.

About 100,000 Armenians were displaced from Artsakh to Armenia following a military campaign launched by Azerbaijan during the past week. The Russian forces, which have been operating in that region as peacekeeping forces for the past two years, took no action.

Armenian Syrians accused the Azerbaijani government of committing a new genocide against the Armenian people with the support of the Turkish government, according to the statement.

The Armenian Genocide was a series of massacres, starvation, and forced displacement inflicted upon 1.5 million Armenians by the Ottoman government in Yerevan, the capital of Armenia.

The statement added, “The violations against Armenians by Azerbaijan are supported by Turkey in an effort to eradicate the Armenian people. Azerbaijan continues its aggression against the people of Artsakh, engaging in all forms of war including displacement, killing, and siege.”

The statement further stated, “Despite the passing of more than 108 years, international silence still persists. What is happening in Artsakh is another round of the crimes committed by the Ottoman state.”
