North Press signs memorandum of understanding with IIIM
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Monitoring and Documentation Department of North Press signed a memorandum of understanding with the United Nations International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism (IIIM) to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons in charge of the most serious crimes committed in Syria in accordance with the international law.
The understanding states that information and evidence documented by the department will be submitted to the mechanism charged with preserving and analyzing evidence of violations of international law, and preparing files to facilitate and expedite impartial and independent criminal proceedings in accordance with international law standards.
On May 23, North Press Agency, with its Monitoring and Documentation Department, became an official member of the Every Casualty Counts (ECC).
The International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism – Syria (IIIM) was established in December 2016 by the United Nations General Assembly to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons responsible for the most serious crimes under International Law committed in the Syria since March 2011.
North Press has formed the Monitoring and Documentation Department late in 2022, it works on documenting the violations that take place against Syrians, including cases of killing, kidnapping, arbitrary arrest, and other issues that affect the rights of civilians, and archives them in special databases.
It also presents statistics within monthly, semi-monthly and annual reports, in addition to presenting thematic reports on many societal issues in which the rights of the Syrians are violated, and formulating them in the human rights and journalistic methods.
