Local committee in Syria’s Hasakah calls for ending Turkish occupation
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The displaced people of Sere Kaniye (Ras al-Ain) in Hasakah Governorate, northeast Syria, celebrated on Monday the second anniversary of the forming of “Sere Kaniye Displaced People Committee” in Sere Kaniye IDP camp, north of Hasakah.
On July 9, 2021, residents of the city of Sere Kaniye, in the northern countryside of Hasakah, formed a committee named “Sere Kaniye Displaced People Committee” in order to document the crimes committed by Turkey and its affiliated armed opposition factions, also known as the Syrian National Army (SNA), against the residents in the city, and to achieve a safe and dignified return.
The committee was formed after Turkey occupied the city in October 2019 following a military operation dubbed “Peace Spring” that was launched by the Turkish forces and their affiliated SNA factions under the pretext of protecting the Turkish national security. The operation led to the displacement of about 300,000 of the city’s original inhabitants.
The committee works in cooperation with the IDPs on a safe return of the IDPs to their homeland without any kind of occupation. It follows up on the situation of the IDPs within the areas of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) including those inside the camps and in the towns and cities. It also pursues the situation of the people who have stayed in Sere Kaniye and suffer from the conditions of the occupation and the violations of the Turkish forces and the SNA factions.
The committee calls for the end of the Turkish occupation of Sere Kaniye, Tel Abyad and Afrin.
