UN quake-aid convoys continue to flow to HTS’ NW Syria
IDLIB, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday evening, a new UN aid convoy entered northwest Syria through the Bab al-Hawa border crossing with Turkey north of Idlib.
This is the third convoy to enter Syrian opposition-held areas this week.
Informed sources told North Press that the UN aid convoy, including 27 UN tricks, accessed areas held by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS, formerly al-Nusra Front) in Idlib for people affected by February earthquakes.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit northwest Syria and southern Turkey, killing thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
The earthquake claimed the lives of about 4.500 people in northwest Syria, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UNOCHA) said on Feb. 20.
The sources added that the trucks were distributed to the UN partners operating in the region, 24 trucks laden with 346.6 tons of flour and 173 tons of cooking oil were distributed to the World Food Programme (WFP), three trucks with 21 tons of drugs were distributed to Physicians Across Continents.
On March 7, a UN convoy of 20 trucks entered HTS areas through the same crossing.
On March 4, a UN convoy of humanitarian aid arrived in areas in northwest Syria through Bab al-Hawa border crossing, it was the second in 24 hours.
Bab al-Hawa border crossing announced that the number of UN relief aid arrived in Idlib through the crossing since the fourth day after the February 6 quake has reached 520 Trucks all of which were handed over to the UN local partners in the area.
