Thousands protest against Greek government after trains collision

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Thousands of people across Greece protested recently against the government in response to a trains’ collision which killed 57 people, including many university students.

The protestors blamed the crash on government underinvestment in the railways and the train operator.

On March 1, a passenger train collided with a freight one head-on at high speed in northern Greece.

Greek officials said the train was carrying 350 passengers when the collision happened near the town of Tempe north of Thessaly.

About 2.000 people in Athens, most of them are university students, gathered to demonstrate; however, the demonstrations were met by resistance from riot police who used tear gas.

In turn, Greek railway workers intend to extend their strike for a second day.
