Egyptian FM visits Turkey in surprise move
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Egypt’s Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, visited Turkey on Monday to express Cairo’s solidarity with the earthquake-stricken country, in what could be seen as a major step in normalization following a decade of sour relations between the two.
His visit came after finishing a similar one to the Syrian capital Damascus, which marked the first of its kind since the start of the uprising in the country in 2011.
Shoukry also met former Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu in the city of Adana. Both countries are in the process of rapprochement following nearly a decade of frosty relations.
Turkey took issue with the current Egyptian’s military putsch against its former Muslim Brotherhood-linked President, Mohamed Morsi, which Ankara supported. Both sides have also clashed over the war in Libya.
“We will discuss concrete steps to improve our relations,” Cavusoglu said during the meeting.
