New quake hits Syria, Turkey
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, a new earthquake hit north Syria and south Turkey, measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale and epicentered in Turkey’s Hatay Province, east of the Mediterranean.
Director of Syria’s National Earthquake Center Raed Ahmad told Sham MF radio, “The earthquake was felt in all Syrian cities. It is an aftershock of the February 6 earthquake.”
Raed said the quake measured 6 on the Richter scale which could pose danger to buildings that sustained cracks in the February 6 earthquake.
Syrian media outlets reported a number of injuries in northwest Syria in Jinderis town and the city of Harem among others. Both places are under the control of the Syrian opposition.
Out of panic people rushed to the streets in Kobani, Latakia, Afrin, Azaz and other areas fearing building collapses.
The Civil Defence in Latakia, affiliated with the government, said there has been no notifications on damages in buildings.
Leader of the Fire Brigade in the Governorate of Latakia Lieutenant-Colonel Muhannad Ja’far said, “Up to now, no information have been received on damages caused by the quake that hit the governorate on Monday evening.”
This has been the strongest quake since the one on February 6as it was felt in all Syrian governorates.
