AANES estimates 500 buildings damaged in Syria’s Manbij due to quake
MANBIJ, Syria (North Press) – An official in the Engineering Union in Manbij, northern Syria, said on Sunday that there are 500 buildings damaged, including uninhabitable houses due to the earthquake that hit Syria on Feb. 6.
Ismail Katwan, co-chair of the Engineering Union, affiliated with the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES), said that the committees that they have formed to assess the buildings impacted by the earthquake revealed that there are 500 buildings are damaged till now.
Fifteen buildings are at risk of collapse and uninhabitable, and residents were alarmed to evacuate those buildings, Katwan told North Press.
At dawn on Feb. 6, a 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Syria and Turkey, killing tens thousands and injuring many more. The earthquake also caused immense destruction of buildings, trapping thousands under the rubble.
Katwan pointed out that the Engineering Union has coordinated with the municipality and Studies Office in the city to find solutions for the slightly damaged buildings.
Earlier, the Engineering Union has formed groups to raise awareness among residents about the risks of the cracked buildings.
In addition, the union has publicized phone numbers to receive calls from those who doubt that their buildings are at risk, Katwan added.
