UN urges keeping politics aside in Syria, helping quake-affected people
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Saturday, the United Nations called for keeping politics aside in Syria and focusing on helping children and women affected by the earthquake that hit a number of areas in the country.
UN Regional Humanitarian Coordinator for the Syria Crisis, Muhannad Hadi, told Al-Arabiya TV, “Politics is not important now, what is important is to help children and women.”
“We have been successful to enter north Syria via opening closed crossings,” Hadi noted.
The UN official called for clean water be secured for people affected in north Syria after noticing cholera cases owing to drinking water being mixed with sewage.
“There are families that do not have shelters in those areas,” he added.
Predawn on February 6, a disastrous quake hit south and central Turkey and north Syria, claiming thousands of lives and injuring many more, not to mention damage and destruction caused to buildings and infrastructure.
