Turkey’s earthquake claims 6.100 lives of Syrians
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Syrian state-run media outlets said that more than 6.100 Syrians died in Turkey due to the earthquake that hit both Syria and Turkey on February 6, a number that is likely to rise significantly.
The pro-government al-Watan newspaper, quoted the Turkish newspaper Qarar as saying that “many others are still under the rubbles in Antakya, Marash, Urfa, Gaziantep, Nordag, Sahlia, Karkhan and Samandag.”
So far, North Press has monitored the entry of 1.454 bodies of Syrian victims of the earthquake in Turkey into Syrian territories, through opposition-run Bab al-Hawa border crossing north of Idlib.
The total number of fatalities in Syria, according to official statements by the Syrian government, the opposition, and the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) has reached 3.694 dead and 14.814 injured.
The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD) announced that the death toll had risen to 35.418 dead across 10 cities in south-central and south-east Turkey.
AFAD said in a statement that about 196.000 earthquake-affected people had been evacuated from the disaster-stricken states.
The death toll continues to rise as search operations go on and more bodies are pulled out from under the rubbles in both countries.
