France, Germany, UK, US call for implementation of UN Res 2254

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Envoys from the French, German, British, and American governments issued a joint statement on Wednesday pressing for the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 2254, which calls for a political solution to the Syrian war.

The four government representatives met with UN Special Envoy Geir Pedersen in Geneva yesterday.

The statement says the governments are committed to the resolution’s implementation, including “a nation-wide ceasefire, the release of any arbitrarily detained persons, free and fair elections, and the need to build conditions for the safe, dignified, and voluntary return of refugees and internally displaced persons, consistent with UN standards”.

“UNSCR 2254 remains the only viable solution to the conflict,” the text concludes.

Yet as Turkey and Russia seek a settlement to Syria’s war outside of its framework, the UN mechanism, adopted in 2015, increasingly appears to be little more than ‘ink on paper’.
