Syrian Parliamentarian Accuses Government of Corruption
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, a member of the People’s Assembly, Syria’s parliament, accused the government of corruption and called for founding a ministry for the poor.
Nasser al-Nasser, a member of the People’s Assembly, said, “Corruption is emanating from the government, we see corruption and nepotism and the sale of parliamentary seats, of which 50 percent are going to people who are unworthy.”
The parliamentarian, while speaking to a local radio station, added, “Everyone is speaking about corruption, but no one has been held accountable to deter others.”
Al-Nasser remarks come days after parliamentarians criticized the policy of the Syrian government and its mismanagement of multiple deteriorating crises in the country during a session of the People’s Assembly.
The parliamentarian demanded the establishment of a “ministry for the poor, because a majority of Syrians are now poor.”
Government-held areas are being ravaged by shortages of fuel, bread, electricity, and other basic goods, as well as serious disruptions to transportation and an inflation of prices.
As a result, a large percentage of Syrians have become poor and food-insecure.
