Asayish call for ‘trust in justice’ after protests in Raqqa
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the Internal Security Forces of North and East Syria (Asayish) called on the people of Raqqa, in northern Syria, to “trust in justice”. Protesters had attacked the courthouse in the aftermath of the murder of a pregnant woman.
This morning, protesters attacked Raqqa’s courthouse, demanding the death penalty be imposed against four men accused of murdering a pregnant women and her eight-year-old child on January 16.
The demonstrators vandalized and burned the courthouse, leading to the escape of 30 people being held in the building’s jail, awaiting trial, a statement by the Asayish alleges.
“Many people, more than a hundred, took to the streets to protest the killing of Noura Ahmad and her eight-year-old daughter,” the statement added. “They attacked, vandalized, and burned the court building.”
“Many of those vandals were arrested. Others are still at large, and will be handed over the judicial authorities,” the Asayish added.
The murdered women, Noura Ahmad, was a teacher in her twenties and eight months pregnant. The Asayish announced that they had arrested the perpetrators a day after the murder.
The Asayish called on the people to “trust in justice,” as all four perpetrators were arrested and handed over to the judicial authorities.
The Asayish noted that they await the court’s decision.
“Some of those who went out to vandalize attacked our forces using grenades, injuring five members of our forces,” the Asayish said. “We stress that those who carried out these acts will be held accountable.”
