Iran welcomes Syria-Turkey normalization
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Iran welcomes Turkish-Syrian rapprochement and expresses readiness to do its best towards reconciliation between the two countries, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian said on Tuesday.
This came in a visit paid by Amirabdollahian to Ankara, as he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Turkish Foreign Minister, Mevlut Cavusoglu.
The visit comes weeks after the landmark meeting that brought together the Syrian and Turkish defence ministers with their Russian counterpart in Moscow.
Late in December 2022, the Syrian and Turkish ministers of defense met in the Russian capital Moscow, marking the first announced official meeting between Syria and Turkey since the beginning of the Syrian civil war in 2011.
Amirabdollahian stressed during a joint news conference with his Turkish counterpart Cavusoglu that his country is “very pleased with the transformation in the ties between Ankara and Damascus.”
“We think that any positive development between Ankara and Damascus will benefit our region and our countries,” he added.
In turn, Cavusoglu talked about the importance of the Iranian rule in the Turkish-Syrian rapprochement.
Before heading to Turkey, the Iranian foreign minister was scheduled to meet with his Russian counterpart on January 17, but the meeting was mutually postponed, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced.
