Iran’s Amirabdollahian heading to Turkey after postponing visit to Russia

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministryannounced the visit of Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian set for January 17 was mutually postponed.

Iran’s Amirabdollahian, after postponing the visit, is heading to Turkey today.

Amirabdollahian and Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov were to have talks today.

The Russian Ministry did not say when the talks would be held.

Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova, had earlier said that the two top diplomats were to discuss the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, cooperation in the UN and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as well as the situations in Syria, Afghanistan and the South Caucasus, according to TASS.

Meanwhile, Iranian Foreign Ministry announced that Amirabdollahian would head to Turkey on an invitation by his Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu.

The two foreign ministers are expected to address current regional and international matters, including the Syrian issue.

Cavusoglu said on Jan. 12, “The Iranian President can also visit Turkey in the upcoming days.”

On Jan. 11, Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed Syria, among other things, over the phone.

The Iranian trip come in tandem with ongoing Russian efforts towards thawing ties between Syria and Turkey.
