Syrian government reveals gas, oil losses since 2011

QAMISHLI, Syrian (North Press) – Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates revealed the outcome of the losses incurred in the gas and oil fields in the country since 2011 up to mid-2022.  

The Ministry said the total direct and indirect losses in the two sectors of gas and oil from the onset of the Syrian crisis up to now reaches 107.1 billion USDs. 

In two letters to the UN Secretary-General of the UN Security Council, it affirmed that the direct loses reached 42.2 billion USDs.

It indicated that the approximate value of losses resulting from extraction, smuggling and illegitimate dealing of oil, gas and the mineral resources reached 18.2 billion USDs.  

The ministry estimated the extent of the losses resulting from sabotage, looting oil and gas extraction and transport facilities by “terrorist groups and Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)” at 3.2 billion USDs, in addition to shelling and aggression acts that were committed by the US-led Global Coalition to Defeat ISIS against Syrian oil and gas facilities.  

According to the Ministry, the approximate amount of losses resulting from aggressions acts reached 2.8 billion USDs, while the approximate amount of indirect losses reached 82.9 billion USDs.

The ministry held accountable countries participant in the US-led Coalition for the losses in the two sectors of oil and gas.  

Late in February, Syria’s Ministry of Oil and Natural Resources said the total losses in the oil sector in the country from the onset of the Syrian crisis up to January 2022 reached 100.5 billion USDs.   

Last year, oil production reached 31.4 million barrels, approximately 85.9 barrels per day, while natural gas reached 4.5 billion cubic meters, with approximate 12.5 million cubic meters per day according to the ministry.
