Promises to exclude NE Syria from Caesar Act not implemented – AANES
RAQQA, Syria (North Press) – Promises to exclude the regions of northeast Syria from Caesar Act have not been implemented yet, an official of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) said on Saturday.
On February 25, a US source told North Press correspondent in Washington that the US “intends to exclude the regions of northeast and northwest Syria from the Caesar Act.”
Salman Barudo, co-chair of the AANES Economy Board said that the sanctions imposed of the Syrian government damaged the economy of the region.
“The Caesar Act has affected the food security of the people of northeast Syria and deteriorated the economic situation,” Barudo added.
In 2019, the US imposed the Caesar Act on the Syrian government and the countries they support it such as Russia and Iran.
The name of the act originally comes from a Syrian military photographer who defected from the Syrian government in 2014 and leaked 55,000 photos of 11,000 prisoners under torture. He used the name “Caesar” to hide his true identity.
Barudo added that the war that raged the region, the damage of the factories and looting their machineries caused the loss of the local production.
He also noted to the Covid-19 pandemic, Turkey’s cut of water and the Russian-Ukrainian war which posed additional challenges on the living and economic situation of the people of northeast Syria.
“The AANES is working on reviving the local production and rehabilitating the factories in accordance with the available capabilities.”
Supporting the necessary needs such as bread and fuel is a priority that the AANES is working to secure them, according to Barudo.
