Government forces besiege town in Syria’s Daraa
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Syrian government forces continued the siege of Jassem town in Daraa countryside and prevented the residents from exiting it, although a meeting, which was held a day earlier, led to an agreement to complete the settlement that began two days ago.
“The government forces are besieging the town, as the university students have not managed to reach their collages for the second successive day although they do not need to settle their conditions,” local sources from the town told North Press.
“As a result of the siege imposed by the government forces, the price of foodstuff has hiked,” the sources added.
Yesterday on Tuesday, a member of the Reform Body in Houran (includes notables and scholars from the region) said that an agreement was reached with the government forces which stipulated the handing over of a smaller number of light weapons that they previously demanded.
The same source said that the government forces retracted yesterday’s agreement and resumed their request to deliver larger quantities of weapons.
On October 5, the Syrian government forces shelled the town of Jassem with four artillery shells wounding a child as he was hospitalized to the Syrian capital, Damascus for treatment.
On September 5, a number of Daraa’s notables and government forces, in the presence of a number of Russian officers, reached a ceasefire agreement, including handing over weapons and deploying governmental security points in the towns of Daraa governorate.
Daraa was subjected to a suffocating siege imposed by Iranian-backed factions and the government forces for more than two months. Finally, an agreement was reached between the parties to the conflict brokered by Russia on a ceasefire and the entry of government forces into the besieged neighborhoods.
