Agreement in Syria’s Daraa al-Balad to collapse: Central Committee
DARAA, Syria (North Press) – The Russian-brokered agreement with Syrian government forces is collapsing and the has reached a “dead end” as a result of the government’s new conditions that have not been previously included in its terms, an official from the Central Committee in Daraa, south Syria, said on Friday.
“Today, we have reached a dead end over the implementation of terms of the agreement as a result of the government forces’ obstinacy and insistence on the implementation of impossible conditions,” Adnan al-Mesalma, Centeral Committee spokesman, told North Press.
“4th Division and pro-Iranian members are the main reason for restricting the demands, making them impossible to achieve,” he added.
On August 31, government military parties and dignitaries and committees of Daraa agreed to implement a Russian-sponsored ceasefire, along with the terms of a previous agreement that included settlements and displacement.
The agreement stipulates a ceasefire in Daraa, the deployment of four military checkpoints within the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad, Tariq al-Sad, and the nearby camps, and the delivery of 34 weapons in exchange for settling the situation of wanted persons and lifting the cordon from the besieged neighborhoods of Daraa.
On Thursday, the second day of the ceasefire agreement, a patrol of Russian forces and officers of the security committee of the Syrian government forces entered the neighborhoods of Daraa al-Balad, Tariq al-Sadd neighborhood, and the camps in the city of Daraa.
Government forces and the pro-Iranian factions are still besieging Daraa al-Balad, Tariq al-Sad neighborhoods, and the camps, and they have not withdrawn in implementation of the agreement. Mesalma added, “These conditions are an affront to people’s honor.”
Additionally, he said that they demanded Russia and the government security committee allow people to flee either to Jordan or Turkey.
