Russian, government forces start combing campaign in Syria’s Palmyra mountains
PALMYRA, Syria (North Press) – On Monday, the Syrian government forces supported by Russian helicopters and drones, started preparations for a combing campaign in the series of the eastern mountains of Palmyra in the middle of the Syrian Desert.
The goal of this campaign is to combat ISIS cells active in the area, a local source told North Press.
“A military convoy that includes four-wheel drive cars equipped with heavy machine guns and buses carrying members of the government forces headed out today at dawn from the northern outskirts of Palmyra city towards the eastern side, eyewitnesses told North Press.
Ahmad Ali (a pseudonym), a member of the Fifth Corps, said that the campaign will target the eastern mountains of Palmyra which ISIS cells use as dens and a source of their operations.
“The campaign came with Russian aerial support through helicopters and drones and implementation of operations by the Fifth Corps and the government forces on the ground,” he added.
Last week, the Fifth Corps deployed military posts in the vicinity of al-Amiriya town in the Syrian Desert, east of Homs, to prepare to launch a combing campaign in its outskirts.
