Russia to limit Iranian deployment in Syria’s Deir ez-Zor
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – On Sunday, the Russian military police-backed Fifth Corps, stationed at the entrance to the town of al-Tebni in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, east Syria, which is under the control of Syrian government forces and is a stronghold of the Iranian-backed groups.
The Fifth Corps took the “Abandoned Battalion” as a military point, which is the first in the town of al-Tebni, the largest area in the western countryside of Deir ez-Zor.
“The Fifth Corps will be deployed in areas in Deir ez-Zor desert, starting from al-Bishri desert, passing through al-Tebni and reaching the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor,” a source from the military police of the government forces told North Press.
The source pointed out that the number of Corps members in the Abandoned Battalion now is 40, including two field commanders, and they are being divided into shifts, at the entrance to the town of al-Tebni from the eastern side of the town.
The operation aims to reduce the significantly deployment of the groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) in the countryside of Deir ez-Zor compared to the presence of government forces and the rest of the military formations, according to the source.
Liwa Fatemiyoun, Iraqi Hezbollah and Harakat al-Nujaba are deployed in the entire western countryside of Deir ez-Zor, while the IRGC, along with Zainebiyoun Brigade and Liwa al-Quds are present in the eastern countryside of Deir ez-Zor, according to local sources.
