Elderly woman from Syria’s Afrin dies of torture in opposition prison

ALEPPO, Syria (North Press) – A 64-year-old woman from Afrin died of torture in a prison of a Turkish-backed armed group in the town of al-Ra’i in the northern countryside of Aleppo, Violations Documentation Center in North Syria (VDCNSY) said on Monday.

Mawlida Nu’man died under torture in prison, after being in detention for more than three years, since the Turkish forces and the their affiliated armed groups invaded Afrin in March 2018, VDCNSY added.

Nu’man, who was from the village of Budikeh in Jindires district, in the countryside of Afrin, was arrested by Hamzat Division after refusing to vacate her house and turn it into military headquarters for the group, according to VDCNSY.

The center pointed out that the cause of death was “poor medical care and not transferring her to the hospital for treatment.”

The old woman had many diseases, including diabetes, hypertension and heart failure, without the prison administration providing her with medication, VDCNSY noted.

The center indicated that the number of civilians who were killed under torture in the prisons of the pro-Turkish armed groups has risen to 150.

Yesterday, the Human Rights Organization – Afrin said, a civilian from Afrin died of severe torture in the prisons of pro-Turkish armed groups in al-Bab region, north Syria.
