Syria’s AANESS sets labor age for children

HASAKAH, Syria (North Press) – On Wednesday, Khaled Jabr, co-chair of the Child Protection Office in Hasakah, told North Press that the circulars issued by the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) “limit child labor in dangerous occupations.”

“Children from 15 to 18 years old may be sent to work provided that he/she does not leave school,” Jabr said.

“Also, during the specified age, the child has the right to learn certain professions such as mobile phones’ shops, computers’ stores, pharmacies and electronics, for a maximum of 6 hours a day,” he added.

On March 30, the AANES Child Protection Office in Armed Conflicts issued several circulars related to setting the working age for children.

This came after discussions held with the Education Board, the Social Affairs and Labor Board, the Legal Affairs Office and the Information Office on child labor on January 31, 2021.

The goal of the circulars issued is to prevent child labor, which has dramatically increased throughout the entire Syrian geography as a result of the ongoing war, and its effects on the situation of children and childhood, according to Child Protection Office.

Jabr pointed out that the circulars issued are “to protect children from hard and very dangerous work, and to emphasize that schools are the places assigned for children.”
