Tension continues between Autonomous Administration and Syrian government in Qamishli

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The city of Qamishli in northeastern Syria witnessed on Tuesday evening a military alert and security tension between the Internal Security Forces (Asayish) and Syrian government forces.

This comes after Syrian government forces’ militants targeted an Asayish point in the Helko neighborhood in the city center, hours earlier.

A source of Asayish told North Press that members of National Defense Forces (NDF), fired at an Asayish post, without any injuries.

The NDF (a Syrian pro-government militia) along with the Syrian government are active in the Security Square and few neighborhoods, while the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (AANES) controls most of Qamishli.

The source added that the Asayish responded to the sources of fire.

The Asayish set up several checkpoints at the entrances to the Security Square and Qamishli Airport.

“The situation is calm now, amid cautious tension between the two parties, but they are prepared for any emergency event,” another security source told North Press.

The city has been in a state of tension due to mutual arrests between the two parties for more than a week, amid Russian interventions to calm the situation and end the escalation.

In exclusive statements to North Press on Monday, an Asayish official held Syria’s Air Force Intelligence responsible for the continuing tension between the AANES and the Syrian government in the city of Qamishli.
