Lebanon to hand former Syrian regime general to Damascus

DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – Lebanese judicial authorities on Tuesday decided to hand over former Syrian regime Brig. Gen. Adel Issa, who is detained in Lebanon, to Syrian authorities to face trial over alleged crimes committed in Syria, Lebanon’s National News Agency reported.

The agency said that Lebanon’s Prosecutor General for Cassation, Judge Ahmad Rami al-Hajj, issued the decision after determining that the legal and judicial conditions for Issa’s extradition had been met.

The decision was based on a 1951 judicial cooperation agreement between Lebanon and Syria, according to the report.

Al-Hajj tasked the Central Criminal Investigations Bureau with transferring Issa from the Beirut Palace of Justice detention facility to the General Security Directorate, in preparation for his handover.

Issa will then be transferred to the Lebanese-Syrian border, where he will be handed over to a Syrian security committee stationed on the Syrian side, the agency noted.
