Dollar exchange rate surges across northeastern Syria

QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The Syrian pound on Tuesday experienced high volatility against the U.S. dollar in northeastern Syria, with money changers reporting sharp fluctuations and a continued decline in the local currency’s value.

Money changers in the city of Qamishli, northeastern Syria, told North Press that the exchange rate has become unstable and changes rapidly throughout the day.

According to local traders, the U.S. dollar was trading at 15,000 Syrian pounds for sale and 14,500 Syrian pounds for purchase in northeastern markets.

In other Syrian markets, including Damascus, Aleppo and Idlib, the dollar traded at around 13,000 Syrian pounds for both buying and selling, according to the Syrian Pound Today exchange rate website.

Money changers said they had observed a sudden rise in the dollar’s value in recent days following the Syrian Central Bank’s announcement that trading with old Syrian banknotes had officially ended.

“The market is experiencing significant volatility and exchange rates vary from one area to another across northeastern Syria, making it impossible to determine an accurate rate at this time,” one money changer said.
