Kurdistan Region says Barzani’s Damascus visit to address Syria ties, SDF integration
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The Kurdistan Region Presidency said on Monday that President Nechirvan Barzani’s visit to Damascus will focus on political and economic issues, stressing that stability in Syria is essential for the wider region.
Speaking to North Press, Kurdistan Region Presidency spokesperson Dilshad Shahab said Erbil attaches special importance to relations with Damascus and continues to support efforts aimed at ensuring stability in Syria.
“The stability of Syria is reflected in the stability of the entire region,” Shahab said.
He added that Barzani has consistently emphasized the need to safeguard the rights of all communities in Syria, underscoring the importance of Kurdish participation in state institutions.
According to Shahab, Barzani’s visit comes in response to an official invitation from Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa and is being coordinated with the Iraqi government. Discussions are expected to cover political developments as well as economic issues of mutual interest.
Shahab also described the Kurdistan Region as a safe haven for Syrian refugees, reaffirming Erbil’s continued interest in developments in Syria and its commitment to following the country’s political process.
According to information obtained by North Press, Barzani is scheduled to hold talks with al-Sharaa on strengthening relations between Damascus and Erbil.
The discussions are also expected to address the January 29 agreement and the measures required to complete the integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into Syrian state institutions.
