Bus crash on Deir ez-Zor-Damascus road kills at least 19, injures 27
DEIR EZ-ZOR, Syria (North Press) – At least 19 people were killed and 27 others injured in a bus collision on the Deir ez-Zor-Damascus road, Syrian state media and officials said on Saturday, while local authorities said the toll could rise as rescue operations continued.
Deir ez-Zor’s Media Directorate told North Press that about 40 people were killed or injured in the crash and that rescue teams were continuing to recover charred bodies from one of the two buses involved. The directorate said the final casualty toll would be announced after rescue operations were completed.
Syrian state-run television, al-Ikhbariya Syria, reported that 19 people were killed and 27 others injured in the collision.
The Syrian Civil Defense said its teams extinguished a fire that broke out after the crash on the Damascus-Deir ez-Zor road between the town of al-Sukhnah and Palmyra.
The Interior Ministry expressed condolences over the crash, which occurred near al-Sukhnah and involved a bus carrying members of the internal security forces and a civilian bus.
The cause of the collision was not immediately announced.
