Kobani MP prioritizes Euphrates water project, border gate opening
KOBANI, Syria (North Press) – Kobani representative in Syria’s People’s Assembly Farhad Shahin on Thursday said his top priorities in the coming period include a project to bring water from the Euphrates River to the city, alongside pursuing service, legislative and economic issues affecting the region.
Shahin told North Press that the Euphrates water project aims to improve water supplies in Kobani, which he said would have positive effects on public services and the local economy.
He added that the initiative is among the key issues he plans to raise and follow up on in the People’s Assembly.
He also said efforts to open a border crossing between the region and Turkey are among his priorities, arguing that such a step would boost trade activity and provide economic benefits for local residents.
On the legislative front, Shahin said the People’s Assembly’s responsibilities under the Constitutional Declaration issued on March 13, 2025, include proposing and approving laws, reviewing existing legislation and amending or repealing it, particularly exceptional laws enacted during the rule of al-Assad regime.
The assembly is also tasked with ratifying treaties, approving amnesties and exercising other powers stipulated in the declaration.
Regarding cultural and linguistic rights, Shahin said work is continuing to follow up on the implementation of Presidential Decree No. 13 of 2026 concerning the cultural and linguistic rights of the Kurdish people.
He noted that members of the People’s Assembly recently met with the Minister of Education to discuss mechanisms for implementing the decree and are expected to hold talks with the Minister of Culture in the coming days to discuss issues related to cultural rights.
