UN voices concern over killing of former SDF fighter
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – The United Nations on Thursday expressed concern over the kidnapping and killing of a former fighter with the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), saying the incident sparked protests in several Kurdish-majority towns in northeastern Syria.
Claudio Cordone, Deputy Special Envoy of the UN Secretary-General for Syria, raised the incident during a briefing to the UN Security Council on Thursday.
Cordone said there had been signs of progress in northeastern Syria, including developments related to the integration of military structures.
He also referred to the appointment of SDF Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi as a presidential adviser following an agreement on the integration of the SDF into Syria’s state institutions.
However, Cordone expressed concern over the recent kidnapping and killing of a former SDF fighter, noting that the incident led to demonstrations in several Kurdish-majority towns.
The UN official stressed the importance of strengthening accountable institutions, broadening political participation, protecting civic space, and advancing transitional justice in Syria.
The incident comes amid continued tensions in northeastern Syria following the killing of the former SDF fighter.
