U.S. Envoy welcomes Syrian judicial action over violence against Druze in Suwayda
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Special Envoy for Syria and Iraq Tom Barrack on Tuesday said the launch of judicial proceedings against individuals accused of involvement in violence against the Druze in Suwayda, southern Syria, marks an important step toward restoring public trust in state institutions and advancing national reconciliation.
In a post on X, Barrack said “Accountability is the cornerstone of reconciliation.”
He described reports that suspects accused of committing “horrific atrocities” in Suwayda are being brought before the courts as a significant development in rebuilding confidence in Syria’s government institutions.
Barrack also praised the Syrian transitional government for pursuing accountability and supporting efforts to strengthen national reunification.
“Suwayda’s future lies in a sovereign Syria where the Druze people are an essential part of a nation moving beyond conflict and toward lasting peace, opportunity, and prosperity,” he wrote.
Earlier, Ammar Ezzeddine, spokesperson for the National Investigation Committee into the Suwayda events, announced that Syria’s Ministry of Justice, in coordination with the committee, had begun legal proceedings against several individuals accused of involvement in the violence that struck the Governorate in 2025.
