Syria foils international drug smuggling attempt in Suwayda
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – Syrian authorities have thwarted an alleged international drug smuggling attempt and seized nearly half a ton of cannabis in the countryside of Suwayda governorate in southern Syria, according to a source at the Interior Ministry.
The source said on Monday that the confiscated shipment belonged to “outlaw groups” operating in Suwayda, according to statements carried by the Syrian state-run Al-Ikhbariya television.
The source added that the competent authorities are continuing their procedures to determine the circumstances surrounding the operation and pursue those involved.
The Interior Ministry did not provide further details regarding the intended destination of the shipment or announce any arrests in connection with the case.
Syria has remained a major transit route for narcotics trafficking in recent years, with authorities periodically announcing seizures of drug shipments and operations targeting smuggling networks across different parts of the country.
