U.S. warns Americans against travel to Jordan’s Aqaba after security threat
DAMASCUS, Syria (North Press) – The U.S. Embassy in Jordan on Sunday urged American citizens to avoid travel to Aqaba’s international airport and seaport after Jordanian authorities evacuated both facilities in response to what it described as a “specific and credible threat.”
In a security alert, the embassy said Jordanian authorities had evacuated the airport and seaport in the southern port city of Aqaba and strongly advised U.S. citizens not to travel to either location.
The embassy also urged Americans in Jordan to comply with all security directives issued by Jordanian authorities.
The alert reiterated previous guidance advising U.S. citizens to avoid travel to military bases in Jordan.
The embassy also noted that, on March 2, 2026, the U.S. Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency U.S. government employees and their family members from Jordan due to ongoing security risks.
The embassy did not provide further details about the nature of the threat or how long the evacuation measures would remain in place. Jordanian authorities have not publicly disclosed additional information.
The security alert comes amid heightened regional tensions following an escalation between the United States and Iran. In recent days, the U.S. military has carried out a series of strikes against Iranian military targets after attacks on American forces in the region, including a deadly assault on U.S. service members in Jordan. The kingdom, a key U.S. ally that hosts American military personnel and serves as a strategic hub for regional operations, has repeatedly tightened security measures during periods of heightened instability.
