Trump meets al-Sharaa on sidelines of NATO Summit
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. President Donald Trump met on Wednesday Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa on the sidelines of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit, hosted in Turkey, where the two leaders discussed recent developments in Syria and regional issues.
Speaking after the meeting, Trump said Syria had become “very stable” and reaffirmed his intention to remove the country from the U.S. list of state sponsors of terrorism.
He also described his decision to lift sanctions on Syria as “a great decision.”
Trump added that Syria could assist the United States regarding Hezbollah and Lebanon, saying the new phase in Damascus opens the door to a different regional role for the country.
The U.S. president also praised al-Sharaa, describing his work as “great” and saying he had managed to unify Syria in only a year and a half.
For his part, Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa said the Syrian people were grateful to the U.S. president, referring to Washington’s decision to lift sanctions and the shift in U.S. policy toward Damascus.
