U.S. Rep. says Syria meets requirements for removal from terrorism list
QAMISHLI, Syria (North Press) – U.S. Representative Joe Wilson on Monday said that Syria has made “historic” progress toward peace and prosperity in a short period, highlighting what he described as growing cooperation with Washington on regional security and counterterrorism.
In a post on X, Wilson said “Syria has taken historic steps toward peace and prosperity, working with the United States to implement President Trump’s regional agenda and countering terrorism.”
The South Carolina congressman renewed his call for Syria to be removed from the U.S. State Sponsors of Terrorism (SST) list, arguing that the country’s recent actions warrant the change.
Wilson said Secretary of State Marco Rubio has assessed that Syria not only meets, but exceeds, the requirements for removal from the designation.
He also urged the U.S. State Department to lower its travel advisory for Syria, saying such a move would better reflect current conditions, encourage foreign investment, and help revive the country’s tourism sector.
Wilson had previously expressed similar views on June 1, saying U.S.-Syrian relations were moving in a positive direction and calling for Syria’s decades-old terrorism designation to be lifted swiftly to support long-term stability and economic recovery.
